Step 1 Make sure your luggage is clearly marked with a tag that states your name. Make sure it is under plastic and written with a permanent marker.
Step 2 Write your name and address on the inside of each piece of your luggage as well, whether you write it on the luggage itself or on a slip of paper.
Step 3 Tie a very bright and easily identifiable scarf around the handle of your bag. If you have a bag that looks like someone else's, they could grab your bag by mistake. The bright scarf will make your bag different from the other similar looking luggage.
Step 4 Take a direct flight. If you can't then allow enough of a layover time to make sure your bag has enough time to end up on your plane.
There are few more safety tips to preserve your luggage
Limit your stopovers – When you have several stops along the way on your trip, it increases the chances of lost luggage. Try to go non-stop if you can.
Don’t check any luggage – The easiest way to keep your luggage from becoming lost is to never let it out of your sight.
Get a brightly coloured bag – It’s a lot harder for a bag to become misplaced in a luggage cart when it’s bright and easy to distinguish from the others. Nearly everyone’s bags are black, so try to make yours stand out.
Packing - Pack valuables and important documents in your carry-on bags. This way you can keep an eye and not worry about personal information being in the wrong hands
Avoid late check-ins - This is the most common reason luggage is lost or delayed, especially during the holidays.
Loosing your baggage when travelling is a total nightmare. I lost mine once and that pretty much spoilt the whole trip. I had to spend the entire first day hunting down for it and had to go for another two days without it. I finally did get it back, but the trip was nearly done by then. Now, I make it a point to make a list of all the things I have in the luggage before traveling so I can hand it over as proof of purchase in case I misplace it. Another good option is to get an additional luggage coverage or an insurance on luggage through the insurance agent.
If you are carrying any type of medications with you are anything else that is valuable, irreplaceable or breakable, make sure that it is carried in your hand bag. This way, even if you do loose your luggage, you still have these stuff with you.
